Poetry and Nouns

Writing Weekly Scripture - Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the earth."

English Weekly Scripture - Psalm 96:1 "Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!"

This week we're beginning two new units: in English we're studying poetry and in writing we're looking deeper into nouns.

One of God's greatest gifts was that of communication. I spoke to my students today about the reason we study the technicalities of parts of speech, parts of a sentence, etc. in Writing. It isn't because I expect them to be able to rattle off the difference between an infinitive verb and a gerund or be able to tell their bosses they can write a compound-complex sentence. The idea is, they need a firm foundation of writing now, which includes knowing all the specific terms. Once they master how to write and edit, they won't need to know which is the dependent or independent clause. They'll be able to write and edit naturally as God gives each of them their gift.

And one of the gifts God has given many of our junior high students is poetry! This week and next in English we'll be learning about how poetry is related to music and rhythm, literary devices, and how to write in a variety of styles. We even have a contest already picked out to enter their best poems. I will send home information on this soon.

Thank you for all you do partnering with me to help make this the best educational experience possible for your child(ren). God bless.
